Yes this would be a good plan, well i know how to speak spanish and I have a few friends who wanted me to teach them spanish. What I think you should is keep practicing and focus on learning the language.Just don't get frustrated if you messup. I think I should use it on my friends 2. =D

My experience is, however, that many of the people who live in the US, and/or grew up in Mexico/Central America, do NOT use proper grammar a lot of the time. Many such people have mixed Spanglish into their Spanish…

Telenovelas? Not the best drama/acting, but you'll learn some language, if you can put up with that. (I have a hard time with it…there was this one…)

MP3? Target has some simple little ones for $10! If you need another!

There are a gazillion sites for learning Spanish…they will give you a more acceptable grammar background than your friend MAY be capable of, but ALWAYS, a native to practice with, is a help.
